2010 Kentucky Derby Betting Tips

Understanding pari-mutuel wagering is a lifetime study if you're a heavy handicapper, and though the general public who get to the track with any degree of regularity understand the fundamentals, there are plenty of subtleties that you learn over a period or time. The small nooks and crannies in the pari-mutuel system can offer the knowledgeable bettor a hefty price, and you want to look at the boards to find overlays. One side of the wagering pools that's often overlooked is the place and show pools. Everybody keeps their eyes on the win chances as they move before post time, but many folks neglect to keep just as close an eye fixed on the other pools.

This is especially true of the Kentucky Derby, when everyone is fixated on picking the winner. But the true value may be found elsewhere, and with the big field in the Derby, there the money is spread out so big place and show payouts are not uncommon.

There are occasions when a pony is taking a lot of cash to win, but for some unknown reason folks just are not backing up their bets in the other pools, and from time to time you can make a place bet on a pony that's favored to win, but maybe taking the 3rd or 4th most cash in the place pool. It's a word that I use frequently when passing along effective racetrack gambling systems, but the secret to making cash at the races is to look for price wherever you'll be able to find it, and often the highest value in a race isn't in the win pool. Be apprised of each wagering opportunity that's available to give yourself the best shot at going home a winner.
