Card Counting Doesn't Guarantee Win

I have heard many a novice gambler say, "I need to learn how to count cards, so I can win at twenty-one".

Well, just because you count cards in the game of twenty-one doesn't guarantee you will win, especially if you only visit you favorite casino once or twice a year.

There are several reasons, but lets focus on the main reason.

Card counting is a "system" that tells you the player when the deck is rich in 10's and face cards, thus eliminating the house advantage and actually giving the play a slight edge.

Don't get me wrong here, that is a GOOD position to be in, however, weather it's you the player or the casino that has the advantage, that advantage only plays out over the long run.

In the short run (a weekend trip) anything is possible.

Let's look at the infamous coin flip; we know that it is just as likely for the coin to come up heads as tails (a 50/50 proposition, no player or house advantage). And when flipped 100,000 times it probably will be heads 50,000 and tails 50,000.

But flip that same coin 10 times and it might come up heads 7 times and tails 3 times, so if heads represents a win then you would have a good weekend, if heads represents a loss, then…better luck next time.

So, unless you play 1000's of hands of twenty-one, I wouldn't worry about counting the cards, looking for the player friendly game and playing smart will probably do you just as much good as card counting!
