How to Employ the Hi-Lo Card Counting System

The Hi-Lo blackjack card counting system is probably the most popular of all card counting methods that are currently available. If you would like to win more frequently when playing blackjack, learn this easy method of counting cards when playing blackjack. Some committed work on your part will be entailed to learn how to count cards.

There are two areas that you’ll have to address when you are learning how to count cards. First, the card values that will be assigned to the various cards and secondly how to calculate a true count which is based on the remaining cards in the deck or in the shoe.

The Hi-Lo card counting system uses the following card values.

* Value: +1 is always assigned to 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s and 6s
* Value: 0 is always assigned to 7s, 8s and 9s
* Value: -1 is always assigned to 10s, Face Cards and Aces

The following facts comprise the fundamental premise of blackjack card counting that has been mathematically proven by basic strategy computer simulations to work.

* If the remaining cards in any deck or shoe is heavily saturated with 10s, Face Cards, and Aces… the player will have the advantage over the dealer.

* If the remaining cards in any deck or shoe has a heavy concentration of low value cards… the dealer is considered to have a definite advantage over the players.

Here’s several facts that should be taken into consideration prior to learning the Hi-Lo card counting system.

* If the cards that are remaining in the deck or the shoe primarily consists of 10s, Face Cards, and Aces… more hands will result in blackjacks and hands totaling 17-21.

* If the two cards that are dealt to the dealer total 12-16, the dealer will have to draw another card and the dealer is more likely to bust if the deck or shoe is heavily saturated with 10s, Face Cards, and Aces.

* If low value cards far outnumber the 10s, Face Cards, and Aces… the player should always carefully contemplate all decisions to split their hands and to double their wager since the likelihood of winning the hand has been diminished by the number of low value cards that are remaining in the deck or the shoe.

As each card is dealt, you will need to keep track of the card count and all of your betting and playing strategy decisions must be based on the card count when it’s your turn to play.

Whenever the card count is close to zero, the deck or the shoe is said to be in a neutral state and neither the player nor the dealer will have an advantage over the other.

The player will have an advantage over the dealer whenever the positive card count is high. That means that a good many of the low value cards have been previously dealt and there is a substantial amount of 10s, Face Cards, and Aces that are still left in the deck or the shoe. At that point, you should increase your bet as the positive card count escalates.

The dealer will definitely have a distinct advantage over the players when the negative card count becomes high. That simply means that many of the 10s, Face Cards, and Aces have already been dealt and there is a considerable amount of low value cards that are still left in the deck or in the shoe. At that particular time, you should reduce your wager as the negative card count worsens. This could possibly be a good time to find another table to play at.

The reliability of the card count will become more accurate as more of the cards are dealt and the deck or the shoe nears completion. The player’s probability of losing or winning will always relate to the card count. You should always remember that if you do not effectively utilize a card counting system, you will most likely lose over the long-term.
