It was one of the oldest variants of poker and was played extensively, until around the 1970s with the introduction of Texas Hold’em and Omaha High. Then 7 Card Stud poker gave way to other game variants which featured faster change of hands and no-limit, such as Texas Hold’em and Omaha High.

7 Card Stud is still a popular poker game though, and is offered with fair-size card rooms in several major casinos, played in major tournaments and in the World Series of Poker. 7 card stud poker games are intricate and challenging; with live cards that you need to be really attentive on.

It’s easy to play 7 Card Stud poker. The 7 Card Stud poker rules are all easy to follow. The real challenge of the game is on the live cards, the draws, and what cards have been shown.

Here’s how a game of 7 card stud poker starts:

1. The game starts with the players putting in an ante.

2. All players are dealt two face-down cards, also known as hole cards or pocket cards, and one face-up card. In this game, you may want to limit your players to 7 since seven cards to eight players plus four burn cards makes 60 cards, and a deck only consists of 52 cards.

3. A betting round commences with the player who has the lowest ranking face-up card, putting in a small bet known as a bring in. Since the bet is considered an open, the next player may not check.

If more than one player has equal low ranked cards, the card’s suit may be used to break the tie.

4. The betting proceeds around the table in clockwise order. Each player can call, raise, or fold.

5. After the betting round is completed, another face-up card is dealt to each player, known as the fourth street or the turn.

6. Another round of betting commences with the player who has the highest ranking face-up cards. Players can check or bet.

7. After the betting round is completed, another face-up card is dealt to each player, known as the fifth street or the river.

8. Another round of betting commences with the player who has the highest ranking face-up cards. Players can check or bet.

9. After the betting round is completed, another face-up card is dealt to each player, known as the sixth street.

10. Another round of betting commences with the player who has the highest ranking face-up cards. Players can check or bet.

11. After the betting round is completed, the 7th card is dealt face-down to the remaining players.

12. A final betting round begins. After the betting round, a showdown begins where players will compare their hands to determine the winning hand.

How To Play 7-Card Stud Poker

7 Card Stud Poker is one of the harder games of poker to learn to play oppose to Texas Holdem or Omaha High / Low which are relatively easy and can be taught in a few minutes. 7 Card Stud was originally the more popular game of poker until Texas Hold em came along, however it is still widely played and is classed as the classic game of poker.

7 Card Stud can be played both high and low. High 7 Card Stud means the player with the highest hand wins the pot, 7 Card Stud High/Low means the winner has to split the winnings with the lowest hand.

How To Play 7-Card Stud Poker

Ante In – Up to 8 players can join the game of 7 Card Stud. To begin with every player puts in an ante. An ante is the amount you have to bet in order to play the game so there is money in the pot. The amount of the ante depends on the game and the amount that is set before the game begins.

Dealer – the dealer deals out 2 pocket cards to each player, and one card facing up, this card is called a door card. The person with the lowest card facing up has to put into the pot a small bet called a bring-in. The betting continues around the table from the left of that player and each player has the option of raising, calling or folding.

More cards – after everyone has placed their bets a 4th card given to each player facing up. The player with the highest cards starts off the betting and this continues in a clockwise direction around the table. After everyone has betted a 5th card is dealt to each player facing up. Again the player with the highest cards starts the betting. Once this has finished a 6th card is dealt facing up and the highest cards player starts the betting again. The final 7th card is dealt face down and a final round of betting occurs.

The Great Finale – the player who can make the best hand of poker with 5 cards from the 7 they were dealt wins the game and wins the pot. In a game of high/low 7 card stud the hand with the highest hand wins but also splits the winning with the person who can make the lowest hand out of their 7 cards.

It may happen that there are not enough cards to finish the game depending on how many players stay in the game all the way to the end; in this case the dealer instead of dealing a card each will place the card in the middle as a community card which everyone can use.
