Playing Against an Aggressive Player

If you find yourself stuck in a game with a particularly aggressive poker player, do not worry. If you play your hands right, and apply the right strategy, it is not you whose chips are in danger but his or hers instead. That is because unlike you, a particularly aggressive player may have some weaknesses that you can exploit throughout the game. Here are some tips on how you can work these weaknesses in your favor.

Play Tight

If your opponent is a particularly aggressive player, they are most likely playing quite loose or betting on only moderately strong hands that may not give him or her a very good chance of winning overall. Use this to your advantage by playing tight until you get a strong hand yourself and then going for their chips each round that they seem to be playing this way. By doing this in small increments, and slowly whittling away the aggressive player's chip pile while keeping your own intact, you can limit your playing to only a select few hands each round and ensure that you remain strong both early and late in the game.
Be Careful With Your Bluffs

As aggressive players typically call almost all hands brought against them and are looser with their plays than conservative players, be careful when trying to bluff against one of them. Chances are that, if you have a relatively weak hand or even a moderately strong one, and you try to bluff an aggressive player, you may end up having all of your bluffs called and your cover blown, making it difficult to use this poker strategy against any other player later in the game. Strategically deciding when to bluff and when not to commit is particularly important in these types of games, and you should bear this in mind when deciding on your course of action.

Draw Them Out

As aggressive players typically are quite willing to call small to moderate bets that are raised against them, you can use this to your advantage in the mid to late game to increase the pot size, as long as you are confident that you have a winning hand and that the aggressive player does not. By maintaining constant low raises and calls to the aggressive players, you can help shake out additional money that may not otherwise come into the pot and help increase your own winnings each time you have a strong hand that you play until the end. Do not be afraid to use this to your advantage every time, as it can easily give you a major leg up over the other players on the table who may not play as strategically as you may. This is one of the major ways that you can ensure that you regularly put yourself ahead in the game, and it will also help to counter any sudden plays an aggressive player might make against you.
