Poker hands explained

The game of poker is all about what hand you have. Here is a description of all the different poker hands and which ones are better than the others.

In poker, depending on which variation you are playing, you have a hand dealt to you consistent of 5 cards. All use a consistent ranking system to rate which hand beats other hands which is used across the board in all poker games.

A strong hand is having a hand of all the same suits or having cards of all the same consecutive values. Here is a description of the names and the hands starting with the best hand first leading down to the not so good hands:

A straight flush – Is a hand of the same suit in consecutive order for example 6,7,8,9,10 of clubs.

Four of a kind – consists of 4 out of the 5 cards being the same number such as having all the 9’s in the different suits.

Full House – this is a hand that has 3 and 2 and so 3 cards are the same i.e. 3 10’s all in different suits and 2 8’s in different suits.

Flush – is a hand that has 5 cards all of the same suit but not in consecutive order.

Three of a kind – is a hand which consists of 3 cards the same such as 3 2’s all in different suits and the remaining 2 cards are random cards.

One pair – has just one pair and so 2 4’s of different suits and then 3 random cards.
