The changing face of Roulette part 1 – From Online to Streaming Roulette.

casinos have always loved roulette. People have always loved roulette. People love the internet. Therefore, the only logical conclusion coming from this is that casinos will also love people who love the internet. If you've been surfing since the dawn of the internet, you'll no doubt remember the early days of internet advertising where it was almost impossible to surf without pop-ups telling you to "Play Free Roulette" or banners for the "Best Online casino".

Irritating though they were, the adverts enticed people to the sites with their free-play offers; once at the online casino, many people would sign-up for the chance to win big money; the casinos could do nothing but increase in popularity. Initially, the user would be required to download a client to desktop which would then communicate with the online site. Games, mainly slots and video poker in early clients, could them be played,

The early slots weren't very interactive; they were little more than press a button and hope you won. Realising that this wouldn't hold peoples attention for long, card games such as blackjack, lotto type games like Keno, and table games like roulette were added to the client. Now there was a large array of games, and many more ways to attract gamblers.
Aside from an inconvenient download many people were unsure about the results. They were computer generated. How did you know they were genuine? To that end, many casinos had to introduce reporting and regulation of the results, but many people were still put off and unsure.

As internet casinos were gaining momentum, online poker was exploding in popularity. Although this was subject to many of the same problems as the casino games (such as a downloadable client and computer drawn cards), there was one main difference. You were playing with real people, rather than sitting alone in front of a screen. Thanks to added online chat, you were able to interact with other players. A sense of community could develop during a game, and there was a real feel to the tournaments.

Broadband internet was also increasing in popularity, and computers were becoming more powerful. These two factors combined to allow TV equivalent video and complex applications to be hosted in the browser. The internet had gained maturity, changing from a flat page application to a true multimedia experience.

The online casinos noticed this, and it didn't take a giant leap of faith to see where this was going. Intelligent browsers removed the need for a download; broadband would allow results to be streamed from a real casino, internet chat and forums could help build up a sense of 'belonging' and community. In short, all the experiences of a real casino could now be had without leaving your house.

In 2004, one of the first casinos to take advantage of this, Dublin Bet, was launched. Streaming a live roulette table from the Fitzwilliam Card Club in Dublin, Ireland, the website became a huge success. Showing a live roulette table played in real time and allowing internet players to place wagers online proved hugely popular. The guarantee that you were seeing real results on a real roulette wheel in a real casino became a success with gamblers everywhere.

Other casinos took note; players wanted real games. They wanted to be able to see that their results were true. And so, many casinos copied: Online streaming roulette had been born.

In the next article, we will look at the evolution of live roulette further. We'll see how casinos such as Super Casino and Smart Live Casino took roulette in a new direction, with their live TV shows, which actually lead to new companies dedicated to online TV roulette such as Challenge Jackpot's Roulette Nation.
