Unexpected Results Returned by Study of Online Poker
The reported findings of an online poker study by a sociology doctoral student at Cornell University was totally amazing. Simply put, the more poker hands that are won by a player, the less the player will most likely win. This is generally true when the player is new to poker. It was determined that numerous wins are more likely to occur in a low-stake game and the more often a player wins, the more likely he will experience a significant loss that will eliminate short-term winnings.
The graduate student from Cornell, Kyle Siler, used the software by PokerTracker to analyze 27,000,000 hands of online poker. The game that he analyzed during this study was No-Limit Texas Hold’em. The hands consisted of a combination of low, medium and high-stake games on tables that seated six players. In any no-limit poker game, the player can risk all of their bankroll on any single bet.
It was found that in low-stake games, the small pairs (Twos through Sevens) were confirmed to be considerably more valuable to the player than the medium pairs (Eights through Jacks). It was stated that a considerable amount of low-stake players have a problem understanding this particular concept since the medium pairs have a higher card value, but the medium pairs provide more uncertainty.
Siler’s study scrutinized the three different levels (low, medium and high-stake games) that were played and the range of the payoffs that were associated with the various strategies at the different levels of play. Along with these factors, how individuals handle risk and uncertainly of the poker game were also taken into consideration.
Kyle Siler concluded that probably the most robust opponent for most players may very well be themselves!
When playing Hold’em with a small pocket pair, never invest a considerable amount of money to go to the flop. If one or more players have made a sizeable raise before the flop, you should consider folding your hand. Over the long-term, you will be much better off if you never raise before the flop with a pair of Twos through Sevens. Always remember that winning a few big pots instead of winning several small pots will usually result in a more profitable poker session and a larger bankroll.
